국가통계포털에 따르면 반려동물 보유 가구는 2020년 기준 전체의 약 15.0%(313만 가구)다. 이중 고양이만 키우는 가구는 57만 가구(18%)다.

중국 상하이에는 반려동물 전용 레스토랑을 열어 고양이와 개가 의자에 앉아 사람처럼 음식을 먹는 곳도 생겼습니다. 휴가를 떠난 주인을 대신해 돌봐주고 놀아주는 호텔도 있습니다. 전용 스파도 성업중입니다. 반려동물의 사진만 촬영해주는 스튜디오도 인기라고 합니다.
김 대표 꿈은 마당 있는 집입니다. 상당수 견주들이 바라는 미래이기도 합니다. “예삐는 산책하다가 놓친 적이 있을 정도로 왈가닥이고, 탄이는 데려올 때부터 소심한 친구지만 사람을 너무 좋아해요. 이제 나이가 있으니 수술도 받고 있는데, 좋은 환경에서 건강하게 키우고 싶어요. 열심히 해서 이사 가야죠. 언제 또 다른 ‘인연’이 찾아올 수도 있잖아요.”박상희 브리딩 대표는 창업 3년 전 기르던 반려동물을 떠나보냈습니다. 로얄캐닌하얀 털을 가진 강아지 ‘스푼이’는 박 대표 가족과 14년을 함께했습니다. 초등학교 때부터 자매처럼 자랐기에 빈자리가 더욱 컸습니다. 그는 “대학을 미국으로 진학하고, 틈틈이 한국에서 살았지만 첫 직장을 미국에서 다니게 되며 결국 마지막 순간을 함께하지 못했다”고 했습니다. 박 대표가 충격을 받을 것을 염려해 그의 부모님은 이 사실을 알리지 않았습니다. “나중에 친구한테 스푼이가 무지개다리를 건넜다는 소식을 듣고 자리에 주저앉아 펑펑 울었다”고 했습니다.
아모레퍼시픽도 올해 비건 펫 케어 브랜드 '푸푸몬스터' 마케팅을 강화하고 있다. 지난달 대한민국 최대 캠핑 페스티벌 '고아웃 캠프'에 펫 전문 브랜드로써는 처음으로 참가했고, 아모레성수에서 삼성화재와 손잡고 팝업스토어를 진행하기도 했다. 푸푸몬스터는 동물실험 원료를 사용하지 않은 비건 브랜드로 애견 샴푸, 데오 스프레이(탈취제) 등이 대표 제품이다. 사내 벤처 육성 프로그램인 린스타트업을 통해 지난해 출범했다. 현재 뷰티제품만 출시했지만 차후 장난감, 펫케어 용품 등으로 확대한다는 계획이다.애경산업과 LG생활건강은 이보다 이른 2016년에 각각 펫 케어 브랜드 '휘슬'과 '시리우스'를 출시했다. 휘슬은 반려견 외에 반려묘 시장이 커지고 있는 점을 착안해 2018년 2월부터 고양이 모래를 출시하며 사업을 확대하고 있다. 고양이·강아지에게 모두 급여 가능한 액상형 간식 '프레시한스틱'의 경우 완도, 대관령, 횡성 등 지역의 대표 특산물을 활용해 국내산 원료를 강조했다. 시리우스도 샴푸, 탈취제 등 위생용품과 간식류를 판매하고 있다.
심지어 반려동물 용품은 대개 비싸다. 필자의 사례를 예로 들어보면, 얼마 전 반려동물 전용 쇼핑몰에서 구매한 동결건조 과일 칩의 가격은 15g에 4500원이었다. 시중에서 사람 간식용으로 나온 과일 칩을 찾아보면 같은 그람 기준 2800원에 판매되고 있다. 둘 다 별도의 첨가물 없는 제품이다.
반면에, 레트로는 옛것을 그대로 쓰는 게 아니라 디자인이나 느낌을 본떠 새로운 제품을 만들기 때문에 빈티지와 차이가 있습니다. 몇 년 전부터 뉴트로(New-tro)라는 신조어가 탄생해 유행을 탔죠. 레트로는 옛것의 제품 그대로의 모습이나 시대 양식을 따라하는 데 그치지 않고, 현대적인 감각을 더해 오래된 것처럼 보이지만 어딘가 새로운 느낌을 주는 걸 말합니다.
중국 2위 전자상거래 업체인 징둥에서 지난해 반려동물 카테고리 중에 스마트 용품의 거래액은 전년 대비 6배나 증가했습니다. 헬스케어(4.5배), 오락(3배), 의류(2.7배) 등에 비해 월등히 높은 수준입니다.
반려동물용 스마트 용품은 아주 다양합니다. 혼자 있는 반려견, 반려묘를 위해 정해진 시간마다 물, 사료 등을 제공하는 기계가 가장 일반이고 웨어러블 기기도 출시돼 운동 수치나 건강 상태를 체크하기도 합니다.
반려동물을 기르는 사람이 늘어나는 만큼 관련 시장도 빠르게 성장하고 있습니다. 영어로 펫코노미라 부르는 반려동물 관련 산업을 중국에선 타징지, 총우징지로 부릅니다.
반려용품군에서도 양극화 현상이 뚜렷했다. 기본 용품으로 교체 주기가 잦은 반려견 패드의 경우 ‘노브랜드’, ‘요요쉬’, ‘몰리스’와 같은 국산 브랜드의 대용량 제품이 판매 순위 상위권에 올랐으나 하네스, 반려견 의류와 같은 패션/액세서리 상품군의 경우 ‘러프웨어’ 등 고가의 수입 브랜드 선호 현상이 짙었다.
반려동물 쇼핑몰 잇츠히얼은 이러한 반려인들의 니즈를 충족해 주고 있는 곳이다. 고양이, 강아지들을 위한 다양한 반려동물 용품들을 선보이고 있다.
이렇듯 시중에는 굳이 반려동물 전용이 아닌 것으로 대체하면 비용을 줄일 수 있는 방법은 얼마든지 있다.
윤혜영 쿠팡 리테일 부사장은 “가을을 맞이한 천만 반려인을 위해 할로윈 데이와 단풍여행을 반려동물과 즐길 수 있도록 이번 이벤트를 마련했다”며 “로켓 펫스티벌에서 계절 변화에 따라 필요해진 반려동물용품을 합리적인 가격으로 구매하시길 바란다”고 말했다.
코로나19로 2020년 다소 성장이 정체됐다가 지난해에는 전년 대비 20.58% 성장하며 이전 수준을 회복했습니다. 올해는 중국의 반려동물 산업 규모가 2693억 위안에 달할 것으로 추정됩니다.
반려동물을 기르는 주요 연령대를 보면 90년대생이 46.3%, 80년대생이 30.5%로 대부분을 차지합니다.
올해 1월부터 11월까지 쓱닷컴이 집계한 자료(누계 주문량 기준)에 따르면 반려동물 상품 카테고리 내 베스트셀러는 ‘몰리스 화이트 스틱껌 소프트치킨(400g)’이었다. 스틱껌은 반복 구매가 잦은 반려견들의 대표 간식 아이템인데다 쓱배송, 새벽배송 등 빠른 배송이 가능하다는 점이 높은 판매량에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다.
인간이 동물과 함께한 역사는 유구합니다. 기원전 1만 년 전까지도 거슬러 오릅니다. 현재도 반려동물을 키우는 수는 상당합니다. 통계청은 인구주택총조사를 통해 지난해 기준 국내 전체 2092만7000가구 중 312만9000가구가 반려동물을 키운다는 조사결과를 공개했다.니다. 단어 뜻 그대로, ‘인생의 동반자’인 셈입니다.
‘할로윈 즐기개’ 테마관은 반려동물을 위한 다양한 패션 아이템을 준비했다. 할로윈 시즌인 만큼 특색 있는 아이템으로 반려동물을 꾸미고 싶은 고객에게 추천한다.
이러한 경향을 반영해 쓱닷컴은 5일부터 오는 11일까지 ‘2022 펫페어 어워즈’ 기획전을 열고, 매일 오전 9시 반려동물 카테고리 상품 구매 시 사용할 수 있는 20% 장바구니 할인 쿠폰을 발급한다. 또한, ‘몰리스펫샵’, ‘로얄캐닌’, ‘오리젠’, ‘러프웨어’ 등 국내·외 대표 반려동물 브랜드의 사료 및 간식, 용품을 최대 40% 추가 할인 판매하며, ‘아침애’ 반려견 사료 등 구매 빈도가 높은 인기 반려동물 식품을 중심으로 1+1 혜택도 제공한다.
사람이 먹는 것과 펫 유산균 간에 큰 차이는 없다. 단 유의해야 할 점이 있다면 반드시 자일리톨과 포도 분말, 유당 등이 없는 제품을 골라야 한다. 그렇지 않을 경우 반려동물에게 치명적인 위협이 될 수도 있다. 필자의 경우 P사의 아기 전용 유산균을 한 달째 급여 중이다. 가격은 60봉 기준 2만7000원 수준이다.
